Natlismtsemeli monastery

Natlismtsemeli monastery is an Orthodox monastery in the Kakheti region that features numerous cave temples and a central church, complemented by a smaller chapel in the southern section. The complex combines natural caves with carved structures and also houses a bell tower and remains of former monastic quarters.

The monastery was founded in the 7th century by Luciane, marking the beginning of a long history of habitation at this sacred site. In the 12th century, the structure underwent significant transformations, with new architectural elements added that expanded its design.

The monastery walls display frescoes from the 18th century, including portraits of King Tamar alongside traditional religious imagery and decorative elements. These painted works offer insight into the artistic traditions that flourished within this sacred space.

Reaching the smaller chapel in the south requires a rock climb that demands some physical effort and careful movement. The visit works best in dry conditions, and sturdy footwear is strongly recommended to safely navigate the steep and sometimes slippery paths.

The central church rises to an exceptional height that sets it distinctly apart from other Georgian monasteries. This remarkable height creates a striking profile against the mountain landscape, making the site easily recognizable from a distance.
