Mara Mountain, Mountain summit in Peary Land, Greenland.
Mara Mountain is a summit in the Roosevelt Mountain Range of northern Greenland, rising 1,155 meters above sea level with steep slopes and snow-covered terrain. The surrounding landscape features the harsh conditions of the Arctic, with frozen ground, minimal vegetation, and extreme cold throughout the year.
The first ascent took place on July 14, 1998, by an American expedition team that set out to reach the northernmost mountain summits in the world. The climb took five hours and became a milestone in polar research and exploration of extreme Arctic regions.
The mountain bears the name of Mara Boland, a horse trainer, mountaineer, and photographer from Santa Ynez who took part in Arctic expeditions and was honored with this naming in 2003.
This location is extremely difficult to reach and requires specialized equipment for extreme cold as well as official permits for travel. Visitors need comprehensive preparation, as conditions are unpredictable and weather can change rapidly.
The mountain sits approximately 718 kilometers from the North Pole and is considered the northernmost known mountain on Earth. This extremely high latitude location makes it an important reference point for polar researchers and scientists studying the furthest northern regions.
