Northeast Greenland National Park
Northeast Greenland National Park, National park in Northeast, Greenland
Northeast Greenland National Park is a protected reserve in the remote northeast of Greenland, covering more than 972,000 square kilometers of Arctic terrain. The area combines glaciers, fjords, mountain ranges, and tundra in a polar landscape that remains largely untouched.
The area was designated a national park in 1974 to protect the northeastern ecosystems of Greenland from human activity. Since then, it has become a reference point for Arctic conservation efforts.
Archaeological sites within the reserve show how hunters once lived in this harsh environment, moving through the seasons in search of game. Their traces tell of survival techniques and adaptation to a land that remains as remote today as it was centuries ago.
Visiting requires a special permit from Greenland authorities and can only be arranged through chartered flights to a few designated landing sites. Planning should be done well in advance, as logistics are complex and depend on weather and season.
The reserve holds the world's largest concentration of musk oxen, accounting for about 40 percent of the global population of this species. These hardy animals roam the tundra in small herds, surviving extreme temperatures thanks to their thick coats.
