Stradun, Main pedestrian thoroughfare in Old Town Dubrovnik, Croatia

Stradun is the main pedestrian thoroughfare in Dubrovnik's Old Town, running roughly 300 meters from the western Pile Gate to the eastern Ploce Gate. The wide limestone-paved passage is flanked by multi-story buildings with uniform shop fronts at ground level, housing cafes, restaurants, and boutiques.

The street originated in the 13th century when a marshy channel separating the settlements of Ragusa and Dubrava was filled to create this central passage. Following major destruction in 1667, it was reconstructed with the uniform architectural design that remains visible today.

The street's uniform shop frontages with semicircular arches reflect building codes established after the 17th century, creating a harmonious architectural continuity. This consistent design, visible in the ground floors along the entire passage, shapes how people move through and perceive the space today.

The area is fully pedestrian-friendly and easy to navigate, with clear passage from one end to the other without vehicles. You'll find cafes, restaurants, and shops distributed along the entire width, making it simple to pause and explore as you walk.

The limestone pavement has developed a polished, glass-like surface from centuries of foot traffic, becoming noticeably slippery when wet. This wear pattern is so pronounced that visitors often find themselves walking carefully, especially on rainy days.
