Stradun is the main pedestrian thoroughfare in Dubrovnik's Old Town, running roughly 300 meters from the western Pile Gate to the eastern Ploce Gate. The street originated in the 13th century when a marshy channel separating the settlements of Ragusa and Dubrava was filled to create this central passage. Following major destruction in 1667, it was reconstructed with the uniform architectural design that remains visible today.
The street's uniform shop frontages with semicircular arches reflect building codes established after the 17th century, creating a harmonious architectural continuity. This consistent design, visible in the ground floors along the entire passage, shapes how people move through and perceive the space today.
