Veszprém, Medieval fortress town in western Hungary.
Veszprém is a medieval fortress town in western Hungary that spreads across seven different hills. The castle district sits at 266 meters (872 feet) elevation, roughly 15 kilometers (9 miles) north of Lake Balaton.
The town received its first episcopal seat in the year 1009 and became an important religious center in medieval Hungary. The country's first episcopal palace was built here in the 11th century.
The title City of Queens appears because bishops here placed crowns on Hungarian queens during the Middle Ages. Today the town carries this name in its official coat of arms and at many public ceremonies.
The local bus network operated by V-Busz connects all main districts and neighboring settlements with 30 lines. The hilly terrain means many routes involve walking up and down slopes.
The old episcopal palace from the 11th century now serves as a museum displaying medieval finds from the region. On the castle hill you can trace the foundations of several chapels and fortifications from different periods.
