Fire watchtower in Veszprém, Medieval watchtower in Veszprém, Hungary
The Fire Watchtower in Veszprém is a cylindrical stone structure located at the southwestern end of the castle complex, rising to about 48 meters high. Its interior features a spiral staircase that leads to a circular observation platform offering views across the city and surrounding region.
This watchtower was part of the castle fortifications and survived an earthquake in 1810. Between 1811 and 1814, it underwent major restoration and received a late Baroque addition designed by architect Henrik Tumler.
The tower plays compositions by local composer Antal Csermák every hour, adding a musical element to its architectural presence in the city.
Climbing to the observation platform involves ascending a narrow spiral staircase that rises steeply through the tower. The effort rewards you with expansive views that reach far across the city and countryside.
Beneath the tower, a Fire Engine Hall operated from 1824 as headquarters for the city's fire brigade and storage for a horse-drawn fire engine. This lower chamber reveals how the building served both observation and practical firefighting needs.
