Margaret ruins in Veszprém

Margaret ruins in Veszprém, Medieval church ruin in Veszprém, Hungary.

Margaret ruins are the remains of a medieval Dominican convent situated below Saint Michael's Cathedral in Veszprém. Foundation stones and wall sections stretch near the Séd Brook and reveal the original layout of the religious complex with its church and adjoining structures.

This convent was founded around 1240 by Bishop Bertalan as a place of learning for aristocratic women. The establishment was closely tied to the kingdom's history, housing members of the royal family during their formative years.

The site reflects monastic life in the Middle Ages and shows how women from noble families lived in religious communities. The remaining walls still convey a sense of the role these spaces played in daily life for those who inhabited them.

The site is accessible from the Cathedral via maintained walkways and features information boards at various points. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes as the terrain is slightly sloped and paths can be steep in places.

Excavations in the 1930s uncovered the precise ground plan of the complex, including a single-naved church and additional buildings. These archaeological discoveries allow visitors today to imagine the original structure of the monastery through its foundation outlines.
