St. Michael's Cathedral, Veszprém, Gothic cathedral in Veszprém, Hungary
St. Michael's Cathedral in Veszprém is a three-aisled church standing on Castle Hill at Szentháromság Square, framed by twin towers on its western side. Inside, the nave features neo-Gothic windows, stone buttresses, and a flat wooden coffered ceiling.
Archaeological finds show that a church stood on this site around the year 1001, making it one of the oldest church sites in Hungary. A fire in 1380 led to a major rebuilding that gave the structure much of its current form.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, this cathedral hosted performances of works by composers such as Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven, shortly after their premieres elsewhere in Europe. Attending a service or concert here meant hearing some of the most talked-about music of the time.
The cathedral sits on Castle Hill and can be reached on foot from the old town center, with the twin towers visible from a distance. Below the main nave there is a large crypt used for clergy burials, which shapes the way the interior floor plan is laid out.
In 1993, relics of Queen Gisela, wife of King Saint Stephen, were transferred here from Niedernburg Abbey in Germany. Their presence draws pilgrims with an interest in the early years of the Hungarian Christian kingdom.
