Amadé-vár, Medieval castle ruins in Gönc, Hungary.
Amadé-vár are castle ruins on Nagy-Amadé hill at about 650 meters elevation, with fragments of old stone walls and an elliptical earthwork. The remains scatter across the wooded hilltop and offer views of the surrounding hilly landscape from above.
The fortress was built between 1271 and 1288 and served the Aba family as a stronghold. After their defeat against King Charles Robert, the Aba sons lost control of the castle.
The name reflects the Aba family who once controlled this place. Today the hilltop location shows how important this spot was for watching over the surrounding lands.
The site sits on a wooded hill that is reachable on foot. Marked hiking trails connect it to Gönc and nearby towns, though the walks are longer and cross hilly terrain.
The fortress disappeared from written records after 1428 and remained completely undocumented for centuries. It reappeared only in the 1700s in geographical descriptions.
