The initial wooden bridge, constructed by the Tisza Railway Company, opened in 1857 and served for 30 years before being replaced by a metal structure.

The bridge serves two major railway lines: Budapest-Záhony and Szolnok-Békéscsaba-Lőkösháza, facilitating passenger and freight transport across the Tisza River.
The structure underwent four complete reconstructions throughout its history, with the current version dating from 1947 and receiving reinforcement updates in 2014.
