Located in northwestern Ireland, County Leitrim extends from Donegal to Longford, featuring waterways, lakes, peat bogs, and plateaus rising to 550 meters in elevation.
The region belonged to the Kingdom of Breifne until the 13th century, when Norman invaders attempted to conquer it but were defeated at the Battle of Áth an Chip.
The Leitrim Design House presents works from over 250 local artists who create handmade jewelry, ceramics, and textiles throughout the county.
Carrick-on-Shannon, the county town, provides river cruising facilities, accommodation options, and serves as the main administrative center for the region.
The county maintained its rural character until 2003, when the first traffic lights were installed, making it the last Irish county to introduce this urban feature.
