Wicklow Mountains, Mountain range in southeastern Ireland.
The Wicklow Mountains are a range made of granite, mica, crystalline schist and quartzite in Counties Wicklow, Dublin and Wexford. The highest peaks rise to around 900 meters and form broad ridges over dark bogs and valleys with conifer plantations.
English forces built roads through these mountains in the 18th century to suppress Irish rebel resistance. The road network later opened the area for forestry and tourism.
Glendalough sits in a deep valley and combines the ruins of old churches with a round tower and two lakes. Hikers often stop here and follow the paths between the stone walls.
The Wicklow Way runs south from Rathfarnham over roughly 130 kilometers and is marked with posts in many places. Weather changes arrive fast, so warm and waterproof clothing helps even in summer.
Turlough Hill hides Ireland's only pumped-storage facility between two lakes at different heights. The turbines use the drop and move water back and forth depending on the needs of the electricity grid.
