Merrion Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Mount Merrion, Ireland
Merrion Castle was a medieval fortification in Mount Merrion, located south of present-day Merrion Gates. The structure was built with stone walls and contained multiple hearths distributed throughout its rooms.
The castle was built in the early 14th century and served as the main residence of the Fitzwilliam family from the 16th century onward. The family maintained control of the site until 1710, when they relinquished ownership.
The castle played a central role during the English Civil War when the Fitzwilliams, supporting the Royalist cause, maintained a garrison within its walls.
The site was demolished in 1780, and the remaining foundations are now located on private property belonging to the Sisters of Charity. Visitors cannot access the ruins directly, but the historical significance of the location can still be appreciated from the surrounding area.
Tax records from the 1660s indicate the structure had at least 16 hearths, making it one of Dublin's largest private buildings of that era. This large number of fireplaces revealed the wealth and social standing of the Fitzwilliam family.
