Capernaum, Archaeological site near Sea of Galilee, Israel
The ruins contain a white limestone synagogue and black basalt residential buildings spanning across the northern shore of Sea of Galilee.
The settlement, established in the 2nd century BC during the Hasmonean period, remained inhabited until its abandonment before the First Crusade.
The site features two synagogues built on top of each other, with the 4th-century structure displaying detailed architectural elements and commemorative inscriptions.
Visitors can explore the ancient harbor, examine grain mills, and view the archaeological remains through elevated walkways that protect the structures.
The excavated house turned church, identified as Saint Peter's residence, contains religious graffiti in multiple languages dating from the 2nd century.
