Monument to the memory of Shlomo Ben-Yosef, Cenotaph memorial in Upper Galilee, Israel.
This cenotaph is a concrete structure standing 700 centimeters tall on a mountainside in Upper Galilee. The monument features inscriptions that commemorate its subject and mark the period in which he lived.
Shlomo Ben-Yosef, a member of the Betar and Irgun, was executed by the British Mandate in 1938. The monument, designed by sculptor Yitzhak Danziger, was unveiled on 5 July 1957 at the spot where Ben-Yosef and two companions threw a grenade at an Arab bus on 21 April 1938. It was renovated in 2013, when a plaza and parking were added.
The base of the monument bears a Hebrew inscription naming Shlomo Ben-Yosef a soldier of the Irgun and "the first of the hanged" under British rule. Another face carries the line from Ze'ev Jabotinsky's poem adopted as Betar's anthem: "To die or to conquer the mountain."
The monument stands beside Route 8900 between Rosh Pinna and Safat, with a paved forecourt and parking spaces prepared in 2013. A memorial stone was placed at the lookout across the road. The site is reached by road, not on foot from either town.
The sculptor Yitzhak Danziger created this structure as an artistic work during a period of political tension. Its design merges craftsmanship with historical witness on a mountain landscape.
