Mount Canaan

Mount Canaan rises to 936 meters in the Upper Galilee and is a distinct feature of the Mediterranean landscape in northern Israel. Several hiking trails lead to the summit from different directions and connect the mountain to other areas and points of interest across the region.

The region was home to Canaanites in the late Bronze Age, a civilization that existed at the same time as the Egyptians and Hittites in this area. This early settlement shaped the mountain's name and history for thousands of years to come.

The mountain carries names in different languages: Har Kena'an in Hebrew and Jabal Canaan in Arabic, showing how different communities have understood this place over time. Both names reflect the region's complex and layered past.

The mountain is accessible via several hiking routes starting from different trailheads in the area. Visitors should bring sturdy footwear and be prepared for changing elevation as they climb.

Atop the summit stand remains of a large crusader fortress that was later rebuilt by the Mamluk leader Baibars, who constructed a massive tower there. This fortification shows how strategically important this vantage point was to different rulers across centuries.
