Amud cave, Prehistoric cave near Lake Tiberias, Israel
The cave entrance opens into a large chamber with smaller passages at 580 meters above sea level in the Nahal Amud gorge.
Excavations by the University of Tokyo in 1961 and 1964 uncovered Neanderthal remains dated between 50,000 and 70,000 years before present.
The discovery of a red deer maxilla placed on an infant Neanderthal's pelvis suggests early burial practices at this archaeological site.
The cave requires special permits for access and contains multiple chambers filled with archaeological deposits under protection of Israeli antiquities law.
The Amud 1 skeleton found in the cave possesses a cranial capacity of 1,740 cubic centimeters, larger than modern human averages.
