Ein Akev, Natural spring in Negev Desert, Israel

Ein Akev is a natural spring in the Negev Desert, in southern Israel, where water flows down a rock face and collects in a pool at the base of a narrow canyon. The surrounding walls of pale limestone rise steeply on both sides, and a few desert plants cling to the cracks where moisture reaches.

This spring served as a water stop on ancient trade and pilgrimage routes crossing the Negev, and the Nabataeans, who built their civilization around desert water management, are among those known to have used it. Over time, the site passed through the hands of different peoples who each left small marks on the surrounding rock.

The word "Ein" in the name simply means "spring" or "eye" in Hebrew and Arabic, and many desert springs in the region share this naming pattern. Locals and hikers use the pool as a natural stop along longer desert routes, and the surrounding rocks often show traces of past human presence, including ancient water channels carved into the stone.

The path to the spring crosses uneven rock and can feel exposed under the desert sun, so setting out in the morning gives a more comfortable experience. Sturdy footwear is important, and carrying more water than you think you need is a practical habit in this terrain.

The pool at the base of the rock face is fed by water that travels through deep underground layers, which keeps it noticeably cool even on the hottest summer days. This also means the water level stays fairly stable across seasons, unlike many desert pools that dry up completely in summer.
