Khirbat Shema, Archaeological excavation site near Mount Meron, Israel.

Khirbat Shema is an archaeological site near Mount Meron containing the ruins of an ancient Jewish village with substantial stone foundations and a synagogue. The excavation has uncovered extensive remains including underground chambers, burial caves, and thousands of artifacts from daily life.

The settlement thrived from 180 CE to 417 CE when a major earthquake destroyed it. This sudden event preserved countless household items, coins, and personal belongings that reveal what life was like during the Roman and Byzantine periods.

The remains of a synagogue show how central religious life was to this ancient Jewish community. The building's prominent location and solid construction reveal the importance people placed on their shared faith and gatherings.

You can walk directly through the exposed ruins and stone foundations scattered across the site, which are left in place for study and viewing. Sturdy footwear helps since the ground is uneven in places and you will want time to explore the different areas at a comfortable pace.

The synagogue here was built with a broadhouse design rather than the basilical layout found in most other regional prayer houses of the era. This architectural choice sets it apart and offers insight into how different communities adapted their worship spaces.
