Satna, Administrative center in Madhya Pradesh, India
Satna is an administrative center in Satna district, located in Madhya Pradesh in central India. The city sits around 500 kilometers (310 miles) east of Bhopal and has grown along the railway that links Jabalpur with Allahabad.
The area was settled as early as the second century BC, when a Buddhist stupa was built at Bharhut. Many sculptural remains from that period now rest in museums throughout India and abroad.
The Venkatesh Mandir, built between 1876 and 1925, represents local architectural traditions and serves as a central religious institution in Satna.
Visitors can reach the city easily by train, as several connections stop here on the route between Jabalpur and Allahabad. The main railway station sits centrally and provides a good base for exploring the surrounding area.
India's first rural university, Mahatma Gandhi Chitrakoot Gramoday Vishwavidyalaya, was founded here in 1991 and focuses on education in agriculture and rural development. The institution primarily serves students from rural communities.
