Lavasa, Planned community in Pune district, India
Lavasa is a planned community in the Pune district, located in the Western Ghats at an elevation of 640 meters, with streets and buildings in Italian-inspired architecture spread across five separate townships. The settlement includes residential zones, school facilities and hospitality areas connected by pedestrian pathways.
Construction of this private city started in 2006 under the direction of Ajit Gulabchand, marking India's first attempt to build a complete new hill station after independence. Darwin Platform Infrastructure Ltd later took over management of the 100-square-kilometer site.
Street names and facade colors follow a Mediterranean design plan that appears most clearly along the shores of the dammed Dasve Lake. Wedding couples often use the terraced squares and waterfront zones for photo shoots, while visitors from nearby cities arrive on weekends.
The pedestrian-friendly streets connect residential neighborhoods with schools like Le Mont High School and the hospitality college École hôtelière, making orientation straightforward. Access comes through winding mountain roads that can become slippery during monsoon rains.
Corporations retain complete control over land usage and urban planning decisions across this 100-square-kilometer area. The dammed Dasve Lake forms the central element of the layout and determines the arrangement of the five townships around its shore.
