Zanskar tehsil

Zanskar tehsil covers 7,000 square kilometers of mountainous terrain with elevations ranging between 3,600 and 4,000 meters above sea level.

The region experienced significant changes when Sengge Namgyal conquered it in the early 17th century, followed by a destructive invasion in 1822.

The population of 13,793 residents speaks Zanskari, uses Tibetan script for writing, and maintains Buddhist traditions through numerous monasteries across the territory.

Access to the region requires careful planning as the Penzi La pass remains blocked for eight months annually, limiting transportation options.

The Phugtal Gompa monastery, established in the 11th century, integrates natural cave formations into its architecture within the Lungnak valley.
