Rangdum Monastery, Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Suru Valley, India
The Rangdum Monastery stands on a steep hill at 4,031 meters elevation, forming a prominent structure against the mountainous backdrop of Ladakh.
Construction of the monastery occurred during the reign of King Tsewang Namgyal II between 1753 and 1782 under the direction of Gelek Yashy Takpa.
The monastery represents the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism and maintains a community of thirty monks who perform religious ceremonies and maintain ancient traditions.
Visitors can reach the monastery by traveling 130 kilometers from Kargil town along the Padum-Sankoo-Kargil road, with accommodation available in nearby guesthouses.
The monastery houses an equal number of monks and donkeys, which contribute to daily operations in this remote Himalayan location.
