Courtallam, Hill station in Tenkasi taluk, India
Courtallam is a settlement in Tenkasi taluk, India, where multiple waterfalls flow through dense forest and empty into natural pools. The rushing water creates mist that wets the surrounding trees and keeps the air cool.
Temples in the area were built between the 9th and 13th centuries under Pandya dynasty rule. Traders later used the mountain paths to move spices between the coastal plains and the interior.
Local families visit the falls throughout the year to bathe in water flowing over medicinal herbs growing on the hillside. Children play in shallow pools formed by the cascades while adults sit on smooth rocks worn by centuries of flowing water.
Reaching the falls requires walking on uneven paths that can become slippery after rain. Visitors should wear closed shoes and come between October and March when the water flow is steady.
Some of the falls have water only during monsoon season while others flow year round. Water from Peraruvi drops directly onto rocks where people stand under the current.
