Hubballi and Dharwad are two cities merged into one municipality situated at roughly 670 meters elevation in the western hills of Karnataka. One side developed around commerce while the other serves as the administrative hub, creating a dual-centered urban area.
The two cities merged into a single municipality in 1962, creating a new administrative unit. Hubballi brought established trade networks to the partnership, while Dharwad served as the regional governance center.
