Chitrakoot, Madhya Pradesh

Chitrakoot is a town in the Satna district of Madhya Pradesh that spreads across forested hills and houses numerous temples and ashrams. The settlement sits along the banks of the Mandakini River and connects religious sites with natural caves and rock formations.

Hindu texts recount that Rama and his family lived in the forests here for over a decade during their exile. Over the centuries, the place became a pilgrimage destination visited by numerous saints and scholars.

The town takes its name from Sanskrit words describing the colorful painted rocks found throughout the area. Pilgrims bathe in the Mandakini River and visit shrines along the waterfront promenade, where priests conduct daily ceremonies.

Access to most religious sites involves walking on stairs and paths that wind through the hilly terrain. Ayurvedic centers offer treatments and massages that can be arranged in advance.

Ancient writings mention that several sages chose this area to meditate in seclusion and teach their disciples. Some of the caves in the rocks still carry the names of those spiritual teachers today.
