Dhanushkodi, Abandoned coastal town in Ramanathapuram district, India
Dhanushkodi sits at the southeastern tip of Pamban Island, where sandy beaches stretch along the coast. Remains of old buildings stand among the dunes, reminding visitors of the former settlement.
A cyclone destroyed the entire settlement in 1964 and residents had to leave. Since then the area remains uninhabited while the ruins stand as witness to the force of nature.
Hindu tradition tells that Rama built a bridge to Lanka here using floating stones. Pilgrims visit to see where two seas meet and hold religious meaning in their stories.
Mini trucks and jeeps run on the newly built road from Rameswaram to the abandoned site. The ride crosses flat terrain with sand, so closed shoes are advisable.
The Kothandaramasamy Temple survived the 1964 cyclone as the only building left intact. It stands today among the debris of the rest of the settlement and draws visitors who want to explore its story.
