Surat district, Administrative district in Gujarat, India.
Surat district is an administrative area in western Gujarat that includes ten talukas such as Surat City, Bardoli, and Choryasi. The region spans roughly 4,400 square kilometers and combines urban centers with rural communities in its geography.
The area was part of the Bombay Presidency before becoming part of Bombay State from 1947 to 1960. It became organized under its current form when Gujarat was established as an independent state.
The area is home to Hindu, Muslim, and Jain communities living side by side and speaking Gujarati, Hindi, and Marathi in daily life. This religious and linguistic diversity has shaped the local character and how neighborhoods develop across towns and villages.
The district is connected by railways, an international airport, and highways that link it to Mumbai and Ahmedabad. These transportation options make it straightforward to navigate the area or reach other major regions.
In 2007 the district underwent a territorial reorganization when its eastern portions separated to form the new Tapi district. This boundary change significantly reshaped the district's geography and administrative scope.
