Saraswati Mandir, Writer's residence and house museum in Surat, India

Saraswati Mandir is a writer's residence and museum in Surat that belonged to the renowned author Narmadashankar Dave, with a compact footprint of about 102 square meters and traditional building materials including brick walls and wooden framework. The structure combines local construction techniques with decorative elements such as Kota stone tiles and Mangalore roof tiles that showcase the craftsmanship of its time.

The writer Narmadashankar Dave purchased the land in 1866 and built this residence, which became the setting for his important literary work. The house stands as a record of a period when Gujarati literature and intellectual thought were awakening in the region.

This house honors a prominent writer whose work shaped Gujarati literature, and visitors can see the connection between the living space and his literary output. The rooms reveal how a 19th-century writer lived and worked, while displayed objects reflect his daily life and creative process.

The museum displays original manuscripts, personal belongings, and collections that document the development of Gujarati literature across centuries. Visitors should allow time to examine the exhibits carefully and explore the compact rooms, which offer an authentic picture of the writer's life.

An identical replica of this structure exists at Veer Narmad South Gujarat University, housing additional handwritten manuscripts and further personal items belonging to the writer. This second building serves as an expanded record of his life's work and makes his legacy accessible in another location.
