Udaipur Solar Observatory

Udaipur Solar Observatory is a research facility located on an island in Fateh Sagar Lake dedicated to studying the sun. The site houses multiple telescopes and specialized instruments that continuously observe the solar atmosphere, magnetic fields, and the movement of solar material.

The observatory was founded in 1976 and modeled after the design of a solar research facility in California. Its creation marked an important step in developing advanced solar research capabilities in India.

The observatory contributes to international solar research programs through the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad, advancing scientific understanding across borders.

Reaching the observatory requires a boat ride across Fateh Sagar Lake to the island location. Visitors should plan their trip with attention to water levels and weather conditions, which can affect access.

The island location reduces air turbulence caused by ground heating, which normally interferes with solar observations. This geographic advantage allows the instruments to capture exceptionally clear and detailed measurements.
