Fateh Sagar Lake, Artificial lake in Udaipur, India.
Fateh Sagar Lake is a reservoir in Udaipur district, Rajasthan, its water stretching roughly two and a half kilometers long and one and a half kilometers wide. Three islands rise from the water at the base of the Aravalli hills, giving the landscape a varied appearance.
In the late 17th century, Maharana Jai Singh created the reservoir to collect water for the city. After a heavy flood, Maharana Fateh Singh ordered the rebuilding with the Connaught Dam, completed in the late 19th century.
The name honors Maharana Fateh Singh, who rebuilt the reservoir after a flood, reminding visitors of the royal Mewar dynasty. Today, residents come here on weekends to walk along the shore or take small boats onto the water.
The reservoir stays open daily from morning until late afternoon, giving visitors enough time to explore the shore and ride on the water. Boats are available in several price ranges, with simple rowboats costing less than faster motorboats.
One of the islands has housed an observatory since the mid-1970s, where researchers study the sun and collect data on its activity. The facility followed the model of similar institutions from California and continues its research work today.
