Rakhigarhi

Rakhigarhi is an archaeological site in Hisar District, Haryana, India, spread across eleven mounds. Excavations reveal paved lanes, underground drainage channels, and foundations of houses that illustrate daily life in an early urban community.

The settlement began around 5500 BCE as a small village and later grew into one of the largest centers of the Indus civilization. Archaeologists found layers from several periods, showing how construction evolved over millennia and eventually ceased around 1900 BCE.

The burial ground shows different body positions and offerings with the deceased, pointing to separate social groups within the settlement. Some graves hold pottery and jewelry while others come with almost nothing, reflecting different rituals among the inhabitants.

The site is spread out and sits in a rural setting, so comfortable shoes and sun protection are advisable. Visitors should keep in mind that some areas may be cordoned off when research work is underway.

Researchers from space agencies examined finds using satellite technology and discovered trade routes connecting the area with distant regions. This collaboration helped make ancient networks visible that were only guessed at before.
