Sainik School, military school in Kazhakootam
Sainik School is a residential institution near Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala that enrolls students from class 6 through class 12. The campus spans over 200 acres on a hilltop and includes classrooms, science labs, a library, sports facilities like tennis courts and a riding ring, computer centers, and dormitories where students live in houses named after notable Indian leaders.
The school was founded in 1962 when V. K. Krishna Menon, India's first Defence Minister, established it to train young people with military discipline and values. It relocated from an Army camp at Pangode to its current Kazhakoottam location in 1964, where it has operated from since.
The school emblem displays three stripes representing India's Army, Navy, and Air Force, colors that students see daily on uniforms and buildings. These symbols connect students to a broader sense of duty and national service from their first day.
The school is located on a hilltop accessible from Thiruvananthapuram and welcomes visitors and parents at its reception office. Classes run throughout the year from April to March, with a structured daily schedule that balances classroom study, sports training, and activities.
The campus operates a riding ring where students learn horsemanship as part of their training. This traditional activity is rarely found at most schools and creates memories that stay with students long after they graduate.
