Garo Hills, Mountain range in Meghalaya, India
Garo Hills is a mountain range spanning five districts of Meghalaya, characterized by dense forests and limestone caves throughout the landscape. The terrain rises to approximately 1,412 meters at its highest point, with Nokrek standing as the most prominent peak.
Under British colonial authority, the region functioned as one administrative district. The territory later divided into five separate regions, with Tura emerging as the main administrative center.
The Garo communities organize daily life around kinship systems passed through mothers, which shapes how people belong to families and villages. Local traditions connect closely with agriculture and natural cycles, influencing celebrations and gatherings throughout the year.
Travel works best between September and May when conditions are manageable throughout the area. The remaining months bring heavy rainfall that creates obstacles for moving around.
The Nokrek Biosphere Reserve shelters wild orange trees of the Citrus Indica species, recognized as the ancestral origin of all commercial citrus fruits. These trees represent an ancient lineage preserved in few places worldwide.
