Film City, Film studio complex in Goregaon East, Mumbai, India
This studio complex covers 520 acres (210 hectares) in Goregaon East and includes 42 outdoor filming areas as well as 16 recording studios for movie productions. The grounds border Sanjay Gandhi National Park and provide diverse backdrops for Bollywood shoots.
The government of Maharashtra founded the studio in 1977 on the initiative of filmmaker V. Shantaram to support the local film industry. The facility brought production resources together in one place and quickly became a key shooting location for Bollywood.
The original name was changed in 2001 to honor Dadasaheb Phalke, who is considered the founder of Indian cinema. His work from the early 20th century laid the foundation for today's Bollywood industry.
The grounds host eight active filming locations that accommodate around 800 crew members daily, along with facilities for makeup, wardrobe, and post-production work. Visitors should note that the studio is primarily a working production site and is not open to tourists.
The grounds border the protected forests of Aarey Colony, where leopards from the nearby national park occasionally wander onto the studio premises. Security measures have been adjusted to protect both animals and film crews.
