National Defence Academy, Military academy in Khadakwasla, Pune, India
The National Defence Academy is a military academy in Khadakwasla near Pune that trains officer cadets for all three branches of the armed forces. The campus beside Khadakwasla Lake includes classrooms, training grounds and sports fields spread across wooded hills.
Founded in 1954, it became the first institution in India to train cadets from all three services together in a single program. This joint training model aimed to build cooperation between the branches from the start of military careers.
Cadets from the army, navy and air force eat together in dining halls and take part in ceremonial parades that follow military traditions passed down through decades. These daily rituals build camaraderie between future officers and create a shared culture that extends beyond their individual service branches.
Access is limited to cadets and invited guests, as the site is not open to the general public. Visitors interested in military training or architecture can view the grounds from outside the perimeter.
The institution has graduated over 30 individuals who later became Chiefs of Staff of the Indian Armed Forces and many recipients of the highest military honors. Several alumni have also served in senior United Nations peacekeeping roles and government leadership positions around the world.
