Aharji

Aharji is a Jain temple featuring a monumental 18-foot statue of Lord Shantinath carved in standing position that shows the craftsmanship of the Chandella period. The temple complex includes multiple structures and is maintained by a religious committee dedicated to preserving its heritage.

The temple was built during the Chandella dynasty and contains inscriptions from 1180 mentioning 32 different Jain communities that funded its construction. Excavations show that multiple Chandella rulers added Jain images to the site over several centuries.

The temple draws pilgrims from both major branches of Jainism and reflects the spiritual importance this place holds for believers today. Visitors can sense the connection to a long religious tradition that remains alive in how the space is used and maintained.

The temple sits about 25 kilometers from Tikamgarh town and is best visited during drier months when paths are easier to navigate. A local guide or information from the temple management can help you better understand the significance of different parts of the complex.

Excavations at the site uncovered more than 300 Jain figures installed between the 10th and 13th centuries by six different ruling families. These discoveries reveal that the place was continually expanded and revered across generations, showing its deep importance to the region.
