Kasol, Mountain hamlet in Parvati Valley, Himachal Pradesh, India
Kasol is a settlement in the Parvati Valley of Himachal Pradesh state in northern India, extending along a narrow strip of road at roughly 1600 meters elevation. Low buildings of wood and stone fit between pine trees, while the turquoise river flows through the valley parallel to the road.
The hamlet grew from a handful of houses into a base for trekkers heading into the upper Parvati Valley starting in the 1990s. The connecting road was completed only in the 1980s, linking the settlement to the regional network.
Small bakeries line the main road, offering fresh bread and pastries following recipes from the Middle East. Vendors sell handwoven shawls and woolen clothing from surrounding valley villages.
Most guesthouses and restaurants are spread along the main road, so you can reach everything on foot. The weather is mild in summer, while winter brings snow and requires warm clothing.
The name comes from the local dialect and means white stone, a reference to the pale rocks along the riverbank. Several suspension bridges cross the river, connecting the road to trails on the opposite side of the valley.
