The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee is a technical university institute in the city of Roorkee in Uttarakhand state, northern India. The sprawling campus includes multiple faculty buildings, research laboratories, student dormitories, and sports facilities spread across a large area.
The institution began in 1847 under the name Thomason College of Civil Engineering to train specialists for the construction of the Ganges Canal. After more than 150 years as a college, it received institute status in 2001 and became part of the national IIT network.
The campus shows a mix of architectural styles from the mid-19th century to the present, with some of the oldest buildings still serving as lecture halls and administrative offices. Students from all parts of India live and work here together, bringing different regional traditions and languages into daily life.
Visitors can explore the grounds during daytime hours, with most buildings open to the public while others remain reserved for academic purposes. Information about events and access is posted at entrances and on notice boards throughout the campus.
The oldest brick buildings on campus were constructed using traditional building techniques from the mid-19th century and now house modern laboratories and offices. Some of the original wooden doors and wrought-iron fittings are still in use, showing the long working life of the facility.
