Bandra Kurla Complex, Central business district in Mumbai, India
Bandra Kurla Complex is a financial district in Mumbai with modern office towers of glass and steel rising along wide roads. The architecture shows clean lines and open plazas between buildings where pedestrians walk among the high-rises.
Authorities began planning this new business district in the seventies to move offices from the crowded downtown. The first buildings appeared after 1990 when banks and companies moved into the developed areas.
The district takes its name from the nearby Bandra neighborhood and the Kurla area where it was built on former marshland. Today financial workers and corporate employees fill the towers while public squares host local events and trade fairs.
Commuters reach the area via suburban trains on the Western and Central lines plus upcoming metro stations nearby. Walking paths between buildings are wide and shaded areas sit under colonnades and in entrance lobbies.
The area houses the first Apple flagship store in India, drawing customers from across the country. It also holds a large diamond district where gemstone traders conduct their business.
