Bada Bagh Chhatris, Royal cenotaphs in Jaisalmer, India

Bada Bagh is a group of sandstone cenotaphs set across rocky terrain with intricately carved dome structures arranged on multiple levels. Each memorial is constructed from pale stone and displays carved details and inscriptions spread across the terraces and surrounding vistas.

Construction of these memorials began in the 16th century when a ruler initiated the site to honor the leaders of Jaisalmer. Over subsequent centuries, additional cenotaphs were added as each generation continued to mark the passing of important figures in the realm.

The inscriptions on each cenotaph tell the stories of deceased rulers, while carved images of horsemen reflect how the Rajput people honored their leaders. These representations show the customs that shaped local identity and how this community remembered those who governed them.

Visit early in the day when temperatures are cooler and light for photography is best, as the site sits on open ground with little shade. Bring plenty of water with you, as the sun exposure can be intense across the rocky terrain.

The final cenotaph on the grounds was intended for a major ruler but was never completed after the mid-20th century. This unfinished structure now stands as a quiet marker of change and reminds visitors of a turning point in local history.
