Bhimtal Lake, Mountain lake in Kumaon region, India.
Bhimtal Lake is a mountain lake in the Kumaon region situated at about 1,375 meters elevation, spreading across a considerable area with a small island in its center. This island is accessible only by boat and houses an aquarium featuring local fish species.
A masonry dam was built in 1883 during the British Raj period to store water for local supply. This structure fundamentally changed the area and created a vital water storage resource for the region.
The lake takes its name from Bhima in the Mahabharata epic, with a 17th-century temple standing on its banks that was built by Raja Baj Bahadur Chand. This place holds deep spiritual significance for local communities and remains an important gathering spot.
The lake is best explored by boat to visit the island and aquarium in the center. It is advisable to arrive in the morning when weather is clear and boats are readily available.
During spring and autumn, migratory birds arrive at the lake and use it as a stopover during their long journeys. These seasonal visitors make the lake a special spot for bird watchers.
