Lakh Bahosi Sanctuary

Lakh Bahosi Sanctuary is a bird sanctuary in Kannauj consisting of extensive wetlands with two shallow lakes connected by a canal system. The site spans approximately 80 square kilometers and provides habitat for numerous bird species throughout the year.

The area was placed under protection in 1988, transforming from a hunting ground used by local landowners into a protected nature area. This shift marked an important change in recognizing the value of this landscape for birds and wildlife.

This sanctuary allows people to develop an interest in birdwatching and to appreciate the natural landscape. Visitors can see how the area shifts with the seasons and why wetlands matter for local bird populations.

The best time for observing is from November to March, when early mornings and late afternoons offer the most favorable conditions. Visitors should bring binoculars and wear comfortable shoes, as the terrain is explored on foot.

The sanctuary is home to bird species representing 49 different genera out of the 97 found across India. This makes the location a significant site for ornithological research and understanding India's bird diversity.
