Kushinagar International Airport, airport in India
Kushinagar International Airport is an airport in the city of Kushinagar, in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, handling both domestic and international flights. The terminal is compact and offers basic facilities including check-in counters, security areas, and waiting areas.
The airport was built during the 2010s to improve air connections for a region that had long relied on distant airports in other cities. It received its first international flight in 2021, marking a turning point for access to this part of northern India.
Kushinagar is the place where Gautama Buddha is believed to have died and reached parinirvana, which makes it one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Buddhism. Many travelers arriving here head straight to the nearby temples and monuments tied to that moment.
The airport is small and easy to move through, so getting from arrival to exit takes very little time. Because flight options are limited, it is worth checking available connections early and planning the rest of the journey from the nearest larger airport if needed.
Although the airport carries an international designation, it handles far fewer flights than almost any other international airport in India. Its first international flight arrived from Sri Lanka, a country with a long Buddhist tradition, which was no coincidence.
