Port of Magdalla, Maritime port in Surat district, India
The Port of Magdalla is a working cargo port on the southern bank of the Tapti River, near Surat in the state of Gujarat, India. It handles a range of freight types, including bulk goods and liquid cargo, and operates year-round.
The port was founded in 1966, with its earliest trade focused on exporting bananas and bringing in fertilizers and grains from abroad. Over the following decades, it expanded its range of goods to meet the growing needs of the Surat region.
Surat, the city this port serves, is one of the world's leading centers for cutting and polishing diamonds, a trade that has shaped the region for generations. Many of the rough stones handled in that trade pass through ports in this area, giving the waterfront a quiet but real role in a global industry.
The port is accessible via State Highway 66 and lies close to an international airport, which makes it easy to reach from the wider Surat area. Because it is an active freight terminal, access to most of the site is restricted to workers and authorized personnel.
The channel leading into the port is marked with lit buoys that guide vessels safely through the passage even when visibility is low. This makes the port usable at night and during the monsoon season, when conditions on the water can be difficult.
