Sion, Mumbai

Sion is a suburban locality in northern Mumbai featuring a mix of shops, residences, and schools spread along its main avenues. The railway station there links the area to both the Central and Harbour lines, making it a key transportation hub.

The Portuguese took control in 1543 and named it after Mount Zion in Jerusalem, building a chapel near the present railway station. Later, a fort was constructed on a hilltop during the colonial period to mark territorial boundaries.

The locality is home to several respected educational institutions that shape daily life and draw many young students to the area. These schools and colleges are deeply woven into the community and define the character of the neighborhood.

The railway station makes it easy to move around to other parts of the city and is a good first landmark when arriving. During the day the area is lively with plenty of shops and eateries, though it's best to explore at your own pace during calmer hours.

The old colonial-era fort still stands on the hilltop, once marking the boundary between Mumbai and the former island of Salsette. This structure is easy for visitors to overlook, yet it offers an interesting view into how the city's geography has changed over time.
