Trichinopoly Group, Cretaceous geological formation in Tamil Nadu, India
The Trichinopoly Group is a layered rock formation made up of sandstone, siltstone, and claystone spread across Tamil Nadu's south. The different layers show varying grain sizes and colors, which reflect changes in the ancient underwater conditions when they were deposited.
The formation took shape during the Late Cretaceous period roughly 94 to 84 million years ago in the Turonian and Santonian ages. It records a time when shallow seas covered this region.
The geology of this formation has provided essential data for understanding the evolution of prehistoric life through numerous fossil discoveries.
The formation can be viewed through several natural exposures where the different layers are visible. A guide is helpful for understanding the rocks and their arrangement properly.
Fossil remains of dinosaurs have been found at multiple sites, including fragments of Dravidosaurus blanfordi. These discoveries show that large reptiles lived in the shallow seas of that time.
