University of Calicut, State university in Kozhikode, India
The University of Calicut is a state public university in Malappuram district, Kerala. Its sprawling campus in Tenhipalam houses faculties for arts, sciences, and social sciences, along with central libraries and administrative blocks.
The foundation took place in 1968 through division of the University of Kerala, bringing higher education to the northern part of the state. M.M. Gani was appointed as the first vice-chancellor and led the establishment of the new institution.
The institution takes its name from the anglicized form of Kozhikode, as the city was known during British colonial times. This historical reference remains in the naming, even though the campus itself sits outside the city limits.
The campus sits about 24 kilometers (15 miles) south of Kozhikode and can be reached via the main road to Tenhipalam. Visitors should note that the grounds are expansive, with several buildings spread across different sections.
The institution runs an Institute of Tribal Studies and Research that conducts work on local indigenous communities. This center also provides support for students from tribal backgrounds who pursue their education here.
