Hindon Airport, Joint military and civil airport in Ghaziabad, India
Hindon Airport is a joint military and civil airport in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, located about 25 miles (40 kilometers) from central New Delhi. The facility combines an operational air force base with a passenger terminal that features eight check-in counters and handles up to 300 travelers per hour.
The Indian Air Force has operated the base for several decades as a station for transport aircraft and fighter jets. Commercial flights to Dehradun and Pithoragarh began in March 2019 when the facility opened to civilian passengers.
The airport celebrates Air Force Day on October 8th with military parades and aviation displays that demonstrate the capabilities of Indian aircraft.
The airport sits near several metro stations, including Dilshad Garden and Major Mohit Sharma Rajendra Nagar, both roughly 3 miles (5 kilometers) away. Travelers should allow extra time for security checks since the facility includes both military and civilian zones.
Air traffic control operates entirely under the Indian Air Force, which coordinates both military operations and civilian flights from the same tower. This shared management requires close coordination between air force personnel and airline operators when scheduling takeoffs and landings.
