Kanjiramattam Sree Mahadeva Temple

Kanjiramattam Sree Mahadeva Temple, Hindu temple along Thodupuzha River, Kerala, India

Kanjiramattam Sree Mahadeva Temple is a Hindu temple located beside the Thodupuzha River in Kerala, India. The structure follows traditional Kerala architectural design with a main shrine dedicated to Shiva represented as a Shiva Lingam facing westward.

The Vadakkumkoor dynasty built this temple near their palace at Karikode along the riverbank as a religious center. The shrine was dedicated to Umamaheswara and became an important spiritual place in the region.

The temple serves as a gathering place where visitors come to worship Shiva and participate in local rituals. These practices connect the community through shared spiritual moments and daily prayer routines.

The temple sits about 1.6 kilometers from the Thodupuzha bus stand and is accessible on foot. Visitors are expected to wear traditional dress: men typically wear a dhoti and women are asked to wear a saree or pavada.

The temple houses a Nandi idol more than a hundred years old, representing the sacred bull that typically appears in other shrines. This uncommon representation makes the place stand out in the region's worship traditions.
